5 most wanted mooncakes in Hong Kong

Just like the FBI’s most wanted list, the following five Hong Kong mooncakes are highly sought after and just as elusive. Their crimes? Possession of way too many calories, indecent exposure of multiple golden yellow yolks, and torturing humanity with their much too short supply.

If you can get your hands on them or are gifted a box (lucky you), you’ll be rewarded with some of the best tasting mooncakes in Hong Kong, not to mention the envy of everyone around you.

Classic Four mooncake from Fook Lam Moon
It is believed that mooncakes have been boxed in fours since the Ming Dynasty.

Now being run by the third generation of the Chiu family, everything about Fook Lam Moon is about tradition, so you can expect some of the best and most legitimate old school mooncakes to appear here. The Classic Four mooncake set contains two golden lotus mooncake with double yolk, and two white lotus mooncake with double yolk. There’s no fuss and muss here, just classic styles coming in a traditional box of fours.

The mooncakes come in a luxurious but simple gold cloth-bound box with a raised Chinese character for ‘joy’, and are priced at HK$680.

Spring Moon’s mini egg custard mooncakes
All gone, better luck next year.

Bad news everyone, Spring Moon’s mini egg custard mooncakes are all sold out. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise though, since they’ve been so incredibly popular over the past few years. The Peninsula even came up with an online ordering system this year, so all the scrambling has been moved online and can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Don’t worry though, there’s still hope, because the Peninsula Boutique is still selling mini egg custard mooncakes made with the same recipe. If you haven’t already got the Spring Moon mooncakes (or want more, we don’t judge), these will hit the spot just the same.

The original, limited edition Spring Moon mooncakes were selling for HK$485 for a box of eight, while the Peninsula Boutique’s are going for HK$288 for four.

Golden Leaf mini mooncakes
Traditional mooncakes at their best.

Every year, Golden Leaf makes it their duty to produce some of the best mooncakes using the most authentic ingredients, so it’s no wonder their customers remain loyal to their delicious mooncakes. The mini green tea with egg yolk mooncakes retain the traditional texture but shies away from the heaviness of classic mooncakes by using refreshing green tea. Another popular type is the creamed egg yolk mooncake, which will satisfy any sweet tooth.

The green tea and creamed egg yolk mooncakes both come in a box of eight, and are going for HK$288.

Traditional mooncakes from the Mandarin Cake Shop
The Mandarin Cake Shop mini mooncakes will suit those wanting a lighter option.

The Mandarin Cake Shop offers traditional mooncakes in all their glory–white lotus, golden lotus, one yolk, two yolks, original size, mini, in a silk bag, in a tin box… you name it, they’ve got it. If you’re looking to have a full-on traditional mooncake feast this season, Mandarin Cake Shop will make all your wishes come true.

Mooncakes come in individuals (HK$138) and boxes of four (HK$328), while mini mooncakes come in boxes of six (HK$248).

Mini mooncakes from Langham Hospitality Group
The mini custard mooncakes come in a box of eight.

Savoury ingredients don’t get any more luxurious than black truffle and parma ham, which is exactly what Langham has placed into their popular mini black truffle with mixed nuts and parma ham mooncake (HK$428).

A pretty daring recipe for mooncakes, we agree, but with more than 200,000 mooncakes sold last year, we’d say Langham knows exactly what they’re doing. Their bite-sized custard mooncakes (HK$248) are putting up quite a competition too, while the mini white lotus seed with egg yolk (HK$328) keeps everything small and traditional.

Mini mooncakes are now available at all Langham Hospitality Group restaurants, including T’ang Court, Ming Court and Yat Tung Heen. They can also be bought online at langhammooncake.com.
